Sherborne Old Castle
View of castle
In August last year during the lock time times, I went to another English Heritage property this time it was Sherborne Old Castle in Dorset whilst on holiday
Sherborne Old Castle
Sherborne Old Castle is situated in the town of Sherborne
Sherborne Old Castle is a romantic 12th-century ruin set in beautiful grounds next to New Sherborne Castle.
After withstanding two sieges during the Civil War, only the Southwest Gatehouse and parts of the castle, including the Great Tower and the North Range, now survive. Loved by Sir Walter Ralegh, he leased the castle but when he was imprisoned in the Tower of London for marrying one of Queen Elizabeth I's maids of honour without her permission, it was then leased out but remained a favourite home of the famous explorer.
It is a haven for a wildlife and flowers which were nice, although windy on the day we visited
There was a one way system around the castle moat
There lots of features in the castle including the gatehouse and the great tower
I enjoyed our visit although short as we had timed tickets, which have to be booked online.
As normal I had a look in the gift shop, I bought these, without having to go in
Guide Book - £4.50
