Seeing animals on a day trip, can make the difference between a calm day out for most people, esp. people with some health conditions and provide a different experience. These are my top 5 day trips that involve my favourite animals horses.

Top 5 Day Trips with Horses

1) Going for a ride on the beach or a hack in the country side

Going for a hack in the country side or a ride on a beach on holiday, can be a great way to enjoy a full day or a afternoon, I have been on many hacks on trails in my time from the USA, to Wales. These can be expensive and you might not be able to rent a riding hat, so read about the place you are going first to see if you have to bring your own equipment.

Then enjoy your ride, where ever you go you will see the path from a different view, the views from horse back is so magical.

2) Visiting a heritage property that has horses

Stanley the Shire Horse at Home Farm at Wimpole Estate

I have recently discovered on a couple of days trip places that have horses and ponies, that are heritage properties so National Trust or English Heritage

These places have experiences or talks which you can listen to one of the volunteers talk about the horse or pony, or show them working on the farm/castle or as medieval mount for a knight in a joust.

These talks are advertised on boards at the visitor reception or near the stables. The jousts are special events which you have to pay for.

To find out more information about the events or open times for the properties are available on the National Trust's or English Heritage websites

3) Visiting a horse charity

I'm rarer lucky to have a horse charity not that far from me, The Horse Trust which is a retirement home for working horses from the Police, Army, Royal Mews and RDA. They also have some horses and ponies that are rescues as well. Visiting these charities can mean that the work to look after them is be able to carry on.

The Horse Trust is open Thursdays to Sunday in high season and you can find more information on their website

There are other horse charities that you can visit include Horse World Welfare, Redwings, or The Donkey Sanctuary or your local charity

4) Visiting a specialist museum

The Household Cavalry museum in London

There a few museums that are specifically about horses and what they have done, one I have visited and is one of those is the Household Calvary museum in London, right on the edge of Horse Guards parade, you can see the history of cavalries, even see the guard horses in their stables through glass (although I wanted to go and pat one of them)

The other museum is the The National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket

5) Seeing horses in the wild

New Forest Pony

Seeing horses in the wild esp. our native breeds from the New Forest Pony to the Dartmoor Pony on Dartmoor is a lovely experience, even if you can get a good photo of them!

These are wild animals so be careful when around them as they could kick out or have foals with them, so keep pets on leads around them and don't try to feed them.

What are you top day trips experiences?
